The winemakers - Penhó Wines
In 2017, Ricardo Moreira returned to the family home located in the Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes, Basto sub-region, in northern Portugal, with the eager desire to revive the family's old vineyards.
They currently cultivate 5 hectares of vineyards on quartzite, granite, and slate soils, at 180m to 550m above sea level. Recently, four more hectare of native grape varieties of the Vinhos Verdes region, namely, Arinto, Alvarinho, Trajadura and Vinhão were planted.
It is with the commitment to preserving the singularity of the land and their grapes that Penhó Wines are produced. The winery is located in an old 18th century family property, preserving the 300-year-old granite vats where foot trodding still takes place. The mild climate with high amounts of rain and continental influence climate allows for the adoption of a natural organic viticulture, from which honest wines emerge, with minimal intervention, with the exception of adding very low amounts of sulfur dioxide to preserve their authenticity.
